CHARTRES AS AN IMPORTANT EUROPEAN CENTER OF LEARNING:
Ivo of Chartres was teaching at the cathedral school, and later, Bernard of Chartres. Bernard's pupils included Gilbert de la Porree, who later became Bishop of Poitiers, and William of Conches who was tutor to the young man who would become Henry II of England.
It was a time of immense intellectual excitement in Chartres. The inns of the town were packed with those eager to hear the learning of these great men and the cathedral refectory was host to passionate arguments of the scriptures. Perhaps the most famous of these humanist scholars was the Englishman, [G 17 / John of Salisbury], who was taught by [G 23 / Peter Abelard] in Paris and William of Conches in Chartres.
